Overview

  • Alkalihalobacillus oshimensis, (aka Bacillus oshimensis), is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. The DNA G+C content is 40.8%. Alkalihalobacillus oshimensis is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Yumoto2005)

  • This organism has been recovered from soil from Japan. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Assumed to utilise glucose. Requires sodium for growth. High salt required for optimum growth, so unlikely gut coloniser.

  • GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS (Yumoto2005);
    Character Response
  • Substrates hydrolysed or digested:
  • casein; gelatin; starch;
  • 🧂
  • Salt tolerance:
  • doesn't tolerate 0% salt; tolerates 20% salt; Grows optimally with 7% salt.
  • pH
  • Acidity tolerance:
  • tolerates pH 7; tolerates pH 10;
  • 🌡
  • Temperature tolerance:
  • grows at 13℃; grows at 41℃; Grows optimally at 28-32℃.
  • H+
  • Acid from carbohydrates usually produced:
  • glucose; mannose; ribose; xylose; maltose; melibiose; raffinose; trehalose; glycerol; mannitol; xylitol;
  • Active enzymes:
  • catalase; oxidase;

  • SPECIAL FEATURES
    Character Response
  • ONPG test:
  • not active
  • Nitrate:
  • not reduced
