Overview

  • Aquincola tertiaricarbonis is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic, pili-motile, coccobacillus bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. The DNA G+C content is 69-70.5%. Aquincola tertiaricarbonis is unlikely to be a gut coloniser. (Lechner2007)

  • This organism has been recovered from MTBE-contaminated water and human gastrointestinal tract (Wang2020). The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Degrades t-butanol, a breakdown product of MTBE. Obligate aerobe, so likely a gut non-coloniser.
