Overview

  • Bacteroides sp. Strain D8 is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. The DNA G+C content is 40%. Bacteroides sp. Strain D8 is probably a rare gut coloniser. (Gerard2007)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces (Gerard2007). Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. A possible gut commensal.

  • GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS (Gerard2007);
    Character Response
  • H+
  • Acid from carbohydrates usually produced:
  • arabinose; glucose; mannose; rhamnose; xylose; lactose; maltose; raffinose; sucrose;
  • Active enzymes:
  • Ala arylamidase; alkaline phosphatase; arabinosidase; arginine dihydrolase; N-Ac β-glucosaminidase; fucosidase; α-galactosidase; β-galactosidase; α-glucosidase; β-glucosidase; β-glucuronidase; glutamic acid decarboxylase; Glu-Glu arylamidase; Gly arylamidase; Leu arylamidase; Leu-Gly arylamidase;

  • SPECIAL FEATURES (Gerard2007);
    Character Response
  • Metabolites produced:
  • acetate (major); propionate (major); isobutyrate (minor); isovalerate; indole;
  • Nitrate:
  • not reduced

  • NOTES

    We report here the first isolation and characterization of a
    cholesterol-reducing bacterium of human origin. Unlike all
    cholesterol-reducing strains from nonhuman sources isolated
    so far, the new isolate does not belong to the genus Eubacterium.
    Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic studies, we show
    that cholesterol-reducing strain D8 is closely related to the
    newly described species Bacteroides dorei (3).
