Overview


  • Brevibacterium otitidis is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, diphtheroidal bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. Brevibacterium otitidis is unlikely to be a gut coloniser. (Wauters2001; Talento2013)



  • This organism has been recovered from clinical sources (ear infection, cyst). The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread (notes: opportunistic in immunocompromised patients). Is a rare opportunistic pathogen. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
