Overview

  • Campylobacter hyointestinalis subsp. hyointestinalis is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, microaerophilic, motile, rod-shaped - curved bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 33-36%. Campylobacter hyointestinalis subsp. hyointestinalis is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Gebhart1985; On1995; Vandamme1991; VanDamme2005Bergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces, human gut, and animal intestines. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread (notes: zoonotic pathogen). Could be a possible pathogen in humans, but unknown at this stage. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
