  • Chlamydia trachomatis, (aka Rickettsia trachomatis), is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, non-motile, bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. Chlamydia trachomatis is unlikely to be a gut coloniser.



  • This organism has been recovered from clinical sources (sexually transmitted disease, arthritis). The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread. Is a known human pathogen. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • C. trachomatis is an obligate intracellular parasite that synthesises and accumulates glycogen. Survives outside the cell by producing infectious and resistant elementary bodies ('EB').
