Overview

  • Clostridium scatologenes is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium. The DNA G+C content is 27%. Clostridium scatologenes is probably a rare gut coloniser. (Kuesel2000; Rainey2011aBergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces (undersized infants - Rainey2011aBergey). The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread (notes: opportunistic in immunocompromised patients). Can cause opportunistic infections, particularly in immunocompromised people. Is a known gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Homoacetogen. Able to use the following donors: ethanol, butanol, glycerol, sugars, methoxylated aromatics.
