Overview

  • Heliomicrobium modesticaldum, (aka Heliobacterium modesticaldum), is a Gram-negative, spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, variably-motile, rod-shaped - curved bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 54.6-55%. Heliomicrobium modesticaldum is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Kimble1995)

  • This organism has been recovered from neutral or alkaline hot springs, Iceland. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Grows phototrophically by photoassimilating pyruvate, lactate and acetate. High optimum growth temperature so unlikely to be a gut coloniser.

  • GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS (Kimble1995);
    Character Response
  • 🧂
  • Salt tolerance:
  • doesn't tolerate 1% salt; Grows optimally with 0% salt.
  • pH
  • Acidity tolerance:
  • Grows optimally at pH 6-7.
  • 🌡
  • Temperature tolerance:
  • grows at 30℃; grows at 56℃; Grows optimally at 52℃.
  • Substrates assimilated or utilised:
  • cysteine; methionine; acetate; lactate; pyruvate; N2 fixed; NH4+ consumed;

  • SPECIAL FEATURES (Kimble1995);
