Overview

  • Lawsonia intracellularis is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, microaerophilic, non-motile, rod-shaped - curved bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. Lawsonia intracellularis is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (McOrist1995)

  • This organism has been recovered from epithelial cells in the ilea of pigs. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread (notes: opportunistic in immunocompromised patients). Could be a possible pathogen in humans, but unknown at this stage. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
