Overview


  • Ligilactobacillus animalis, (aka Lactobacillus animalis), is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 7 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 41–44%. Ligilactobacillus animalis is probably a common, although minor, coloniser of the gut. (Hammes2011eBergey; Rossi2016; Dent1982)



  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces, clinical sources ( blood, abscess, wound - CCUG), human dental plaque, animal faeces. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
