Overview

  • Mycobacterium abscessus, (aka Mycobacterium chelonae subsp. abscessus), is a Gram-variable, non-spore-forming, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 64.1%. Mycobacterium abscessus is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Kusunoki1992; Leao2011; Magee2012Bergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from clinical sources (sputum, respiratory tract, blood - CCUG) and human faeces. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread (notes: human and animal pathogen). It is an opportunistic pathogen. A possible gut commensal.
