Overview

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, aerobic, non-motile, diplococci bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 50-53%. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is unlikely to be a gut coloniser. (Tonjum2005Bergey)



  • This organism has been recovered from patients with gonorrhoea (purulent venereal discharges), anorectal infections and other clinical sources. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread. Is a known human pathogen. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
