Overview

  • Neobacillus fumarioli, (aka Bacillus fumarioli), is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium. The DNA G+C content is 40.7%. Neobacillus fumarioli is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Logan2000a)

  • This organism has been recovered from geothermal soils and active and inactive fumaroles, Antarctica. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Obligate aerobe and high optimum temperature suggest it is not a gut coloniser. Also requires low pH to grow.
