Overview

  • Peptoniphilus lacrimalis, (aka Peptostreptococcus lacrimalis), is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, strictly anaerobic, non-motile, coccus bacterium. It has been detected in at least 8 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 30-31%. Peptoniphilus lacrimalis is probably a common, although minor, coloniser of the gut. (Ezaki2001; Ezaki2011eBergey; Li1992; Murdoch1998)

  • This organism has been recovered from clinical sources (abscess, blood, vagina, eye - CCUG) and human faeces. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 2, i.e., risk of individual infection, but low risk of spread. It is an opportunistic pathogen. Is a known gut commensal.
