Overview

  • Pseudarthrobacter oxydans, (aka Arthrobacter oxydans), is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, aerobic, non-motile, bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 63.1%. Pseudarthrobacter oxydans is probably a rare gut coloniser. (Busse2016; Wauters2000; Funke1996)

  • This organism has been recovered from clinical sources and human faeces. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Could be a possible pathogen in humans, but unknown at this stage. A possible gut commensal.

  • GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS (Busse2016); (Wauters2000); (Funke1996);
    Character Response
  • Substrates hydrolysed or digested:
  • DNA; gelatin; tyrosine;
  • 🌡
  • Temperature tolerance:
  • grows at 20℃; strain-variable at 42(d);
  • H+
  • Acid from carbohydrates usually produced:
  • mannitol;
  • Substrates assimilated or utilised:
  • L-arabinose; galactose; glucose; lactose; rhamnose; ribose; sorbitol; xylose; arginine; histidine; citrate; formate; malonate; propionate; succinate; L-asparagine;
  • Active enzymes:
  • β-galactosidase; α-glucosidase;

  • SPECIAL FEATURES (Busse2016); (Wauters2000);
    Character Response
  • Nitrate:
  • reduced
  • NO3➔NO2:
  • reduced

  • While Arthrobacter oxydans is reported to be BSL 1 from ATCC, there are literature reports of isolation of Arthrobacter oxydans from human clinical samples, so this bacterium should be treated as a potential pathogen.
