Overview

  • Rahnella aquatilis is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic, variably-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 4 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 51-56%. Rahnella aquatilis is likely to be transient and not a long-term gut coloniser. (Izard1979; Funke1995a; Kampfer2005aBergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces (CCUG) and clinical sources (blood, urine - CCUG). The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread (notes: opportunistic in immunocompromised patients). Could be a possible pathogen in humans, but unknown at this stage. Likely to be transient and not a long-term gut commensal.
