Overview

  • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 2 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 50-53%. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi is probably a rare gut coloniser. (Popoff2005Bergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces. Only pathogenic in humans, causing typhoid fever. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 3, i.e., high risk of individual infection, and some risk of spread (notes: vaccine available). This is a dangerous pathogen. Unlikely to be a commensal. Robust growth can have negative consequences for gut health.
