Overview

  • Weissella viridescens, (aka Lactobacillus viridescens), is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 3 gut microbiome compilation studies or metastudies. The DNA G+C content is 41-44%. Weissella viridescens is probably a common, although minor, coloniser of the gut. (Collins1993a; Bjorkroth2011Bergey)

  • This organism has been recovered from human faeces (Sanz2007 - coeliac children), clinical specimens (blood), discolored cured meat products and pasteurized milk. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Is a rare opportunistic pathogen. A possible gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • In 48% of Europeans (unseenbio.com). Minor coloniser.
