Overview


  • Wolinella succinogenes, (aka Vibrio succinogenes), is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, anaerobic, motile, helical-shaped bacterium. It has been detected in at least 1 gut microbiome compilation study or metastudy. The DNA G+C content is 46-49%. Wolinella succinogenes is probably a rare gut coloniser. (Tanner1981; Baar2003; Wolin1961)



  • This organism has been recovered from bovine rumen. The risk classification (www.baua.de) for this organism is 1, i.e., low risk of infection and spread. Pathogenicity status unknown, or very unlikely to be pathogenic. A possible gut commensal.

  • QUIRKS
  • Hydrogen and formate are used as energy sources; carbohydrates are not fermented and don't support growth. Has acquired the genes necessary for N2 fixation, probably by lateral gene transfer from cyanobacteria.
